Last year, I joined the Armed Services YMCA (ASYMCA) Military Spouse Writing Program, a space designed to support military spouses in developing our voices through storytelling. Throughout the year, I wrote blog posts that delved into important topics and conversations, which I hope were helpful to my fellow military community members.
Before joining the program, I was constantly searching for outlets to share my experiences and make new connections. I felt the weight of military life and needed a place to document the struggle. The Military Spouse Writing Program came at the perfect time, giving me the peace of mind of knowing I wasn’t alone in my journey and allowing me to reiterate that to my community.
The chance to share my experiences wasn’t the only thing that motivated me to join. The program offered hands-on learning to build technical skills, including writing, blog formatting, peer editing, and even photography. It also helped to fill in soft skill gaps, such as learning structure, accountability, confidence, and community. It was easy to jump at such a great learning opportunity!
Skills and Confidence Gained
During my time in the ASYMCA Military Spouse Writing Program, my writing improved while I developed competence in clarity, storytelling, formatting, and revision. The edits and critiques I received, not only from my leaders but also from my peers, provided me with powerful lessons on how to refine my work into its best possible form.
From workshops, poignant writing prompts, peer feedback, and a well-spirited cohort, the confidence I gained in being vulnerable about my experiences is immeasurable. Without this opportunity, I wouldn’t have been able to fill the many gaps in my technical skills and abilities to communicate effectively with my peers.
I learned that my story is not only valuable but deserves to be heard. I gained the knowledge that I am not alone in my experiences as a military spouse, and I am grateful to be able to share that with our readers.
Friends Made Along the Way
One of my favorite challenges from the Military Spouse Writing Program was engaging in peer edits with my cohort. I am a very independent person, and I enjoy working autonomously. Although I wasn’t opposed to peer-edits, my highly independent brain was a little uncomfortable with the idea at first.
When I first received feedback from one of my fellow writers, I was amazed by how helpful it was as I revised my draft. I was even able to connect with this fellow writer and build a friendship; she kindly purchased a gift from my baby registry, and I am so thankful. Not only did I see improvement in my blog writing skills, but I also saw improvement in how I gave edits to my peers. I became a more well-rounded team player, and I am grateful for the experience that gave me that confidence.
Reflecting On the Journey
I am so grateful for the opportunity to be a writer here at ASYMCA. I love being able to write about their programs and resources that help my fellow military community members thrive. Most of all, I am grateful for the mentorship and community I have received since joining.
Support Military Spouses Through Storytelling
The ASYMCA Military Spouse Writing Program has given me more than just writing skills — it’s offered confidence, connection, and a renewed sense of purpose. Programs like this remind military spouses that our voices matter and that we don’t have to navigate this life alone.
If you believe in empowering military families with opportunities for growth, healing, and community, your support can make a difference. Donations help sustain not only the Writing Program, but a wide range of services — from childcare to food assistance to mental health support — that strengthen military life at every stage.
Thank you for supporting deployed service members and their families
