Empowered to Write: ASYMCA Military Spouse Writing Program
Written by Kalyn Love
When I first joined the Armed Services YMCA (ASYMCA) Military Spouse Writing Program, my motivation was simple: I missed writing. I hadn’t written anything creatively since high school yearbook and newspaper, but something in me knew it was time to pick up the pen again. I hoped the program would help me reconnect with a part of myself I’d put on the shelf for years — it did that, and so much more!
Finding My Confidence
Through the monthly workshops and weekly practice offered by the program, I gained not only writing skills but the confidence I didn’t realize I’d lost. Each session pushed me to explore my voice, experiment with new styles, and trust my instincts as a storyteller. The feedback and encouragement from the community made all the difference; being surrounded by fellow military spouses who “get it” reminded me that our stories matter, and that there’s space for them to be heard.
A Standout Moment
One standout moment for me was when I interviewed my little sister for the blog. We talked openly about how we were both affected by our dad’s military service — something we hadn’t really explored together before. That conversation became my favorite writing assignment of the whole program. It reminded me of the power of storytelling to deepen relationships, make sense of our experiences, and give voice to things we’ve carried quietly for years.
My Voice, My Future
This program has reshaped my personal and professional goals. I’m now inspired to pursue writing more intentionally, whether through personal interest projects, blogging, or future storytelling opportunities. Most importantly, it reminded me that my voice is still there — and worth using.
