When you marry into the military, you don’t just gain a partner in uniform — you step into a whole new way of life. New states. New countries. Temporary furniture. Suitcases that stay half-packed. And, maybe hardest of all, the quiet moments of loneliness when “home” feels a little too…...
Solo But Not Alone: Building a Military Community Overseas
September 25, 2025
Much of the conversation around military life tends to focus on families: the spouse leaving behind a career, the kids saying goodbye to friends, the household adjusting to yet another move. But what is often left unsaid are the experiences of single service members — those who pack their bags…...
Patriot Day: Reflecting on Resilience and Remembrance
September 11, 2025
Patriot Day honors the victims and first responders for their bravery during the September 11th attacks. For most Americans, 9/11 is a difficult time of remembrance. We all grieve for the lives lost that fateful day. For military families, Patriot Day can feel like a harsh reminder of military sacrifices…...
Teaching Students in Transition It’s been a few years since I was a science teacher in a public school in Hampton Roads, but I vividly remember the classroom preparation, documentation, planning, and student lists that marked the start of the academic year. Reflecting on new students entering the classroom, I…...

New School Year, New Beginnings: Support for Military Kids
August 13, 2025
Back-to-school season is an exciting time — fresh backpacks, new teachers, and new friends. But for military kids, it can also mean starting over completely. Every Permanent Change of Station (PCS) move brings uncertainty: new schools, new faces, new routines. While these changes build resilience, they can also bring stress…...
Purple Heart Day: Reflections from a Military Spouse
August 7, 2025
What Purple Heart Day Means Every year on August 7th, we pause as a military community to say “thank you” to the millions of men and women who have served, been wounded, and carry the visible and invisible scars of war. As a military spouse, Purple Heart Day holds deep…...
The moving truck had just pulled away when we stood in our new kitchen, surrounded by half-unpacked boxes and a to-do list longer than my arm. We had just completed a PCS move — again — and the back-to-school countdown had already begun. The emotional whiplash of relocation, combined with…...
It’s PCS (Permanent Change of Station) season, and to kick it off, I’ll share the story of my very first military move. My husband and I were newly married, and this would be not only my first duty station, but his as well, since he was fresh out of basic…...
Fighting Summer Hunger: ASYMCA’s Role in Food Insecurity
July 9, 2025
When School Ends, Support Shouldn't For many military families, the end of the school year doesn’t just mean a break from routines — it means a break from essential meal support. When Maya accepted her placement in the Early Childhood Education Fellowship, she thought she was simply stepping into a professional development program. What she didn’t realize yet was that she was beginning a transformative journey—one that would shape not only her career, building portable skills and opening doors to new opportunities, but also the lives of countless young children and families.
On her first day, Maya entered a brightly lit child development center filled with small tables, colorful books, and the joyful hum of children discovering the world. But the fellowship quickly proved to be more than classroom exposure. It was a structured, immersive experience that combined hands-on teaching, mentorship, coursework, and leadership development.
Each week, Maya worked side-by-side with a lead teacher who guided her through the complexities of child development, how to recognize emerging language skills, how to support emotional regulation, and how to design learning experiences that spark curiosity. In the afternoons, she experienced and explored topics with her cohort like equity in early childhood education, trauma-informed teaching, and family engagement. These experiences didn’t just build knowledge — they challenged assumptions and inspired purpose.
Midway through the fellowship, Maya began to see the impact of her growth. She noticed how a child who once struggled to communicate now eagerly shared stories, or how a small adjustment in her teaching approach created a more inclusive environment for a child with sensory needs. These were not just successes; they were life-changing moments.
Equally powerful was the community. The fellowship created a network of passionate peers who shared ideas, challenges, and encouragement. Through collaborative projects and reflective discussions, Maya developed both confidence and a sense of belonging in the profession.
By the end of the program, Maya had not only developed and refined her teaching practice but also discovered her voice as an advocate for early childhood education. She left the fellowship ready to contribute to systemic improvements in the field.
