How Armed Services YMCA Supports Military Families
Written by Mary Joy Matias
The Quiet Weight of Military Life
Not everyone will understand the silent battles military families face. The constant weight of uncertainty, long separations, deployments, and frequent moves — all while balancing the demands of everyday life — takes a huge toll.
As a military spouse with 3 kids and a deployed husband, I underestimated the emotions and loneliness that come with military life.
When my husband left for deployment, I thought the hard part would only last a couple of weeks. I was wrong. I found myself crying under the blanket while my kids played in the same room.
It takes a lot of courage to be in the military and a lot of sacrifices — for families, too. It’s saying goodbye, starting over, and carrying on even when you think you can’t. It takes courage, resilience, and strength.
But military families can’t face this alone. That’s why the support of the Armed Services YMCA is so meaningful. They’re on a mission to make everyday life easier for military families carrying the quiet weight of service.
The Everyday Challenges Military Families Face
Every day, we face many challenges in life. We all struggle from one point to another. Sometimes, though, knowing that it’s going to be hard doesn’t make it any easier.
Before my husband’s recent deployment, we were so busy preparing. We thought we were mentally ready. I thought I was ready. But little did I know, I was not ready at all.
Every day, I wake up feeling lonely, feeling empty, feeling lost. But I have to keep going because life does not stop for me, or for any other military family.
Common struggles military families face include:
Military Deployment – From rapid-response deployments to planned rotations, military families are often separated from their loved one for months at a time. Add in training for that deployment, and the separation could be over a year long.- Frequent Permanent Change of Station (PCS) Moves – Relocating every 2-3 means starting over: new home, new community, new challenges.
- Child Care Challenges – Frequent moves, coupled with geographic distance from relatives, make finding reliable, affordable childcare difficult. When there’s no village to lean on and a waitlist at every childcare center, military spouses can find it hard to work or even attend a doctor’s appointment.
- Financial Stress – Low base pay and military spouse unemployment (or underemployment) create financial instability, especially for junior-enlisted families. In fact, more than 1 in 4 military families need assistance with food.
- Rebuilding Routines and Community – Every PCS move, every deployment, and every job shift brings new routines and a new community.
And, military spouses take on additional roles during deployments. From solo parenting to being the sole decision-maker, the spouse on the home front often finds their plate overflowing. Even a child’s sickness becomes harder as you care for them alone — the worrying and waiting, the uncertainty of whether to take them to the ER. My world stops when my kids are sick. It breaks my heart when I feel like I can’t ease their pain.
The emotional and practical toll these transitions have on a military family is profound.
What Support from the Armed Services YMCA Really Means
Armed Services YMCA is not just a program; it’s a military support organization that meets the current and ongoing needs of military families. It’s the constant in a military family’s life — sometimes, the only constant.
It’s a sense of stability, reassurance, connection, and much-needed relief during difficult seasons.
Armed Services YMCA helps military families feel less isolated and more supported during times of uncertainty. For me, that looks like using my voice on this platform. I hope to reach other military spouses who may be experiencing hardship, struggles, challenges, or just looking for guidance on how to cope during deployment, just like I was.
Why Military Family Support Matters
Why does military family support matter? The right support brings tangible relief and room to breathe.
These programs and services directly impact military families:
- Affordable child care allows spouses to continue working
- Food assistance eases financial pressure
- Youth programs help children navigate change
- Deployment quilts bring comfort and warmth to kids missing their deployed parent
Armed Services YMCA helps military families remain resilient during deployments, transitions, and all stages of military life.
For my family, the Armed Services YMCA has been one of the best forms of military support. It helps our little ones, but it has also helped our entire family. Meeting fellow families and learning from their stories has strengthened and molded us. They’ve inspired us and yet also reminded us that military sacrifice — experienced by all members of the family, not just those in uniform — is worth the challenge. It gives us a reason to keep going, even when times are tough.
Imagine If Every Military Family Had Access
Imagine if every military family had access to the resources, support, and community they need to thrive — no matter where military life takes them.
Unfortunately, not every military installation has equal access to support systems. If every single military family had access to Armed Services YMCA services, it would mean fewer military families struggling in silence, stronger communities, and more stability during deployments and PCS moves.
With the right tools and support system, we are better equipped to face challenges, celebrate milestones, and build strong, connected communities. That’s why it’s so important that Armed Services YMCA support expands nationwide.
Armed Services YMCA: Mission Military Families
Strong military families create strong military communities. By connecting families with educational resources, youth programs, financial guidance, employment assistance, and supportive networks, we help build a foundation for success and well-being.
With the Mission Military Families campaign, Armed Services YMCA aims to bring military family support to every base and installation across the United States. The campaign brings financial relief, affordable child care, and a constant community of support to military families, especially those earliest in their careers and raising children on tight budgets.
Because supporting military families isn’t just a mission — it’s a commitment to those who serve and the loved ones who stand beside them every step of the way.
Standing Behind Military Families
Finding support is not always easy. Some people hesitate to ask for help, but there is a big community out there willing to reach out a hand. For my family and for all military families, the Armed Services YMCA is here.
Support can be the difference between struggle and hope.
No military family should navigate military life alone.
