Military Spouse Writing Program: Maddison's Journey
Written by Maddison Bailey
When I first discovered the Armed Services YMCA (ASYMCA) Military Spouse Writing Program, it felt like the perfect blend of everything I’ve always loved. Writing has been a constant thread in my life, from studying communications and having my own amateur blog to dreaming of one day becoming an author. The program felt like a chance to explore writing on a more “professional” level while embracing my identity as a military spouse. It was an opportunity I didn’t want to miss, so I jumped in headfirst!
A Space to Grow
Before joining, I had always written from my own personal experience. That kind of intimate, reflective writing felt natural. However, writing in a “blog” style or covering topics outside of my own experience was new and, honestly, a little intimidating. I was confident in my personal storytelling but nervous about stepping into unfamiliar formats and voices. I knew I needed structure, challenge, and a space to grow.
Monthly Workshops
Through the monthly workshops, I gained so much more than I expected. Our program covered topics ranging from the importance of evergreen content and Search Engine Optimization (SEO) best practices to interviewing, photography, and peer review. Each session equipped us with a new layer of understanding; not just about writing, but about how to create content that’s engaging, relevant, and discoverable.
I learned how social writing and blogging shape an online presence and gained practical skills that will be highly valuable for my business and my writing going forward. The photography workshop was especially impactful for me because my business relies so heavily on its online presence. In today’s digital world, strong visuals can be the difference between being overlooked and truly standing out online.
The program didn’t just strengthen my creative voice; it also imparted knowledge I can directly apply in a professional setting.
A Standout Moment
One standout moment for me was writing about the trip my husband and I took to Acadia National Park and exploring how our adventure tied into our military lifestyle. It reminded me how much I love painting a picture with words and building a scene readers can step into.
This program has reconnected me with my creative side in the best way! It pushed me to write about topics I wasn’t entirely comfortable with, but it also taught me the importance of curiosity and learning. It reignited a belief that “I am a writer.”
Finding Your Voice
To any military spouse thinking about applying, especially if you’re nervous or unsure: ABSOLUTELY DO IT! This unique and uplifting opportunity to embrace your creativity and explore your experience as a military spouse shouldn’t be missed.
Sharing your story matters.
For readers, yes, but also for yourself.
This program provides you with the space, guidance, and confidence to find your voice. And that’s something truly powerful.
