Military Spouses: The Backbone of the Armed Forces
Written by Chelsea Guigma
Military spouses wear many hats: they’re the best friend, the personal assistant, the chef, the nurse, the homemaker — they are the glue that holds everything together. A military spouse is a pillar in their family and community.
This Military Family Appreciation Month, the Armed Services YMCA (ASYMCA) is dedicated to helping military spouses and their families through programs that empower, uplift, and support service members and their loved ones.
Challenges Faced by Military Spouses
With rising food costs, many military spouses struggle to cover a full week’s worth of meals. Often, their families don’t qualify for food assistance programs like the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) due to misunderstandings about their income. This means they face food insecurity and unexpected expenses, which add stress, especially during deployments. Every few years, they also face the challenge of moving to a new duty station, which can force military spouses to put their own goals on hold.
ASYMCA offers military family support year-round, providing childcare services for military spouses who need time to look for a new job, start college, or simply take a break and receive emotional support. ASYMCA’s programs and services are specially designed to empower military spouses and help them thrive.
How Military Spouses Show Strength and Resilience
Military spouses show strength in their vulnerability. Despite the challenges they face, they demonstrate remarkable resilience, rising to the occasion to bring stability to their families. They also seek and ask for help within their communities and join nonprofit organization workshops and events, like those offered by ASYMCA.
ASYMCA’s community programs partner with local organizations to offer extra tools and support to strengthen military spouses. For example, the Military Spouses Summer Retreat provides an annual camping getaway, peer support groups, relaxation, and connection with other military spouses. The Military Spouse Symposium engages spouses with activities that enhance their endurance and resilience, while also helping them build networks and strengthen community ties.
My Personal Testimony
ASYMCA has been nothing short of amazing. The support they gave me throughout my journey as a young military spouse has been invaluable. They were there for me when I had no one else to watch my children while I attended doctor appointments, especially during my pregnancy while my husband was deployed. During one of my roughest months, they provided emotional support and essentials like food, diapers, and wipes for my youngest child. This year, my family was even nominated for one of their holiday campaigns.
I am deeply grateful to ASYMCA for their services and partnership opportunities. They gave me, as an aspiring writer and freelancer, the chance to share my experiences as a military spouse, which truly reflects their unwavering military family support.
