Operation Ride Home: Bringing Families Together
Written by Kalyn Love
For most families, the holidays bring joy, traditions, and togetherness. But when service members are stationed hundreds or even thousands of miles from home, reuniting with loved ones isnโt always easy.
With the cost of airfare, gas, busy military schedules โ and the constant demands of everyday life โ a trip home can quickly become out of reach, logistically and financially. For junior-enlisted military families especially, finding room in the budget for holiday travel can be a challenge.
That is where programs like Operation Ride Home can make a meaningful difference.
When Home Is Hundreds of Miles Away
Military life often means building a home far from your support system. Service members and their families may find themselves stationed across the country โ or even overseas โ while parents, grandparents, siblings, and longtime friends remain miles away.
During the holidays, that distance can feel even greater.
Traveling home can mean multiple plane tickets, gas, time away from work, and coordinating travel around military responsibilities. Those costs add up quickly, making a holiday trip difficult or even impossible for families on a tight budget.
Missing a holiday at home is more than missing a date on the calendar. Itโs missing family traditions, watching children grow up from a distance, or being away from the people who provide comfort and support during challenging seasons.
Why Going Home Matters

Sometimes, going home is about much more than a plane ticket or a long drive.
Itโs aboutโฆ
โฆ sitting around the same table as family
โฆ grandparents getting to hug their grandchildren
โฆ cousins playing together
โฆ children experiencing traditions passed down through generations.
For military families, those moments can provide a valuable opportunity to reconnect and recharge.
The Armed Services YMCA recognizes the importance of helping military families maintain those connections. Operation Ride Home was created to make holiday travel possible for junior-enlisted service members and their immediate families who might otherwise not have the financial means to travel home.
When families spend meaningful time together, the benefits extend well beyond the holiday season. A few days surrounded by loved ones can create memories that last through deployments, relocations, and the many transitions that come with military life.
What Is Operation Ride Home?
Operation Ride Home is a holiday travel assistance program for junior enlisted families. In partnership with Jack Danielโs and official airline American Airlines, the Armed Services YMCA has helped more than 16,000 service members and their immediate family members travel home for the holidays since the program began in 2011.
Operation Ride Home is available to eligible E1-E5 Active Duty and Reserve personnel from the Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, Space Force, and Coast Guard, along with eligible spouses and direct dependent children ages 0-18. Families must be stationed at one of nearly 100 installations across the United States served by an Armed Services YMCA branch.
Holiday assistance can include up to $500 toward a round-trip airline ticket or a $125 prepaid gift card for vehicle travel per eligible family member. Each local Armed Services YMCA branch reviews applications and selects eligible families who might not otherwise be able to afford the trip home.
Families interested in applying should check the current application information and eligibility requirements through their local branch.
More Than a Trip Home
At first glance, holiday travel assistance may seem like a practical solution to a financial challenge. But for the families who receive it, the impact is much greater.
Operation Ride Home can help create a moment when distance no longer feels quite so overwhelming.
It can mean a military child getting to spend Christmas with grandparents. It can mean a service member reconnecting with family after months of demanding responsibilities. It can mean parents continuing traditions their children look forward to every year.
Most importantly, it can remind military families that they are not alone.
Connection and belonging are important parts of a strong support system. For military families who spend much of the year adapting to new communities, new schedules, and new responsibilities, time with loved ones can provide a familiar sense of home.
The Armed Services YMCA works to strengthen military families throughout every stage of military life. Operation Ride Home is one way the organization helps families maintain important connections when distance and finances might otherwise stand in the way.
Helping More Military Families Make It Home
Every year, military families need help getting home for the holidays, and available funding does not always meet the full need. Donations from Jack Danielโs, community supporters, and readers like you help make Operation Ride Home possible.
Supporting the program is one way to help a military family experience something many of us may take for granted: simply being home for the holidays.
Whether through a donation, fundraising, or sharing information about the program with a military family who may qualify, every effort can help strengthen the connections that matter most.
Bringing Families Together, One Trip at a Time
Home can mean different things to different people. For a military family, home can be a childhood house, a parent’s kitchen table, or a familiar place where generations gather during the holidays.
Operation Ride Home makes those moments possible for eligible military families who may otherwise struggle to afford the journey.
Sometimes the greatest gift you can give a military family isn’t something you can wrap.
Sometimes, it’s simply the chance to be together.
