What ASYMCA’s Legacy Means to Me

Written by Grace Olinkiewicz

Discovering ASYMCA

I first discovered the Armed Services YMCA (ASYMCA), a military support organization, during a presentation by my husband’s Commanding Officer before the start of his Basic School at Camp Barrett in Virginia. The presentation outlined numerous programs available to military families, which helped ease my anxiety as a young military spouse.

Afterward, I took time to explore the information more deeply and found the ASYMCA.

Recently, I began contributing to ASYMCA as a writer and quickly realized I had joined something much bigger than I had ever imagined. I became part of a larger community rooted in purpose and connection. Alongside my fellow military spouse writers, I am now contributing to a 165-year legacy of service.

A Legacy That Began in the Lincoln Era

The ASYMCA was founded in 1861 during the Civil War. President Abraham Lincoln once described its services as “proper and praiseworthy” as efforts grew to support soldiers far from home.

Since its founding, this longstanding military nonprofit has continued to provide military services for 165 years, supporting military families through times of war, global conflict, and national uncertainty, including the COVID-19 pandemic.

What Legacy Means in Military Life Today

Legacy takes on a deeper meaning in military life. It is not just about the past, but about the lasting impact of service, sacrifice, and support that carries forward to future generations.

When viewed through this lens, legacy becomes something we actively build. It is reflected in how we support one another, the communities we create, and the strength we pass on.

In its earliest days, ASYMCA’s military services focused on supporting Civil War soldiers. Today, that mission has expanded to support entire military families. A strong support system remains essential in every stage of military life.

The continued legacy of the ASYMCA is clearly reflected in its mission:

To enhance the lives of active-duty junior enlisted military members and their families by providing programs that improve quality of life, build resiliency, and offer support for the unique challenges of military life.

How ASYMCA Continues to Serve Military Families

Today, that legacy continues through programs and services designed to meet the real, evolving needs of military families. From navigating deployments and frequent moves to managing the day-to-day challenges of military life, families rely on consistent, accessible support systems.

What makes the ASYMCA’s legacy so meaningful is not just its longevity, but its ability to respond to these changing needs with care and intention. Whether it’s supporting children through transitions, providing essential resources, or creating spaces for connection, ASYMCA plays a critical role in helping families maintain stability during times of uncertainty.

Here are just a few of the ways ASYMCA brings that support to life:

Child and Youth Programs

  • Operation Hero: A free after-school program tailored to the unique needs of military children, Operation Hero teaches life skills and offers homework assistance.
  • Operation Camp: These fun day camps encourage healthy living and foster connection, helping kids learn skills, develop character, and make friends.
  • Operation Kid Comfort: Volunteers make custom quilts and pillowcases with the image of their deployed parent to help children cope with separation.

Assistance and Support Programs

  • Food Assistance: Food pantries and distributions ensure no military family goes hungry.
  • Operation Ride Home: Offers financial assistance to junior-enlisted service members and their immediate family to travel home for the holidays.
  • Operation Holiday Joy: Making the holidays even brighter, Operation Holiday Joy provides meals and toys for junior enlisted service families.

What ASYMCA’s Legacy Means to Me Personally

The ASYMCA has provided me with a platform to learn and grow as a writer. Their Military Spouse Writing Program has connected me to a community of fellow military spouses and has given me a sense of belonging. The ASYMCA stands out to me from other programs because, as a contributor, you get to be a part of something that not only helps you enter into a writing career, but also because our voices, the voices of all military spouses, get to be heard far and wide to offer support to others.

Our experiences, no matter how long we’ve been a military spouse, are valued and encouraged in our blogs because no one knows better what a military spouse is going through than a fellow spouse.

I am proud to be a part of such an extensive legacy, which inspires me to write from the heart.

Why Military Family Support Still Matters Today

Military family support remains a vital part of military life. It provides resources, stability, and reassurance for families facing uncertainty, deployments, and Permanent Change of Station (PCS) moves.

Military nonprofit organizations like ASYMCA offer critical support during these major life transitions. They provide a sense of stability and remind families that they are seen, supported, and not alone.

Together, we can ensure that military families continue to have their needs met — not just today, but for generations to come.

Being part of this 165-year legacy is truly humbling. By sharing ASYMCA resources through my writing, I am giving back to the community that has welcomed me with open arms.

The ASYMCA is more than a program — it is a lasting support system for military families.
