School’s Out for Summer: Programs and Tips for Military Kids
Written by Julianna Burson
With school out for summer, many military families are excited to enjoy more quality time in a relaxed environment, free from the pressures of academic schedules and extracurricular activities. Sun-filled days, new adventures, and the chance to reconnect await you. However, this transition from structured routines to summer activities can also bring stress.
For many families, summer is also the season of Permanent Change of Station (PCS). On average, military children move six to nine times during their school years — disrupting routines and emotional stability.
In addition to these challenges, about 25% of active-duty families regularly face food insecurity, and roughly 40% of military children depend on free or reduced lunch programs during the school year. When those meals disappear over summer break, the strain grows.
Thankfully, military support is available. Military youth programs and community resources, offered through organizations like the Armed Services YMCA (ASYMCA), are designed to help families thrive during the summer months.
Supporting Emotional and Social Well-being
Without the structured socialization of school, sports, and other extracurriculars, summer can be a lonely time for military kids. Frequent moves and geographic distance from extended family and old friends can heighten feelings of isolation and emotional stress.
Building a Summer Toolkit for Families
Having a summer parenting toolkit can help you prepare for the unique challenges the season may bring. While summer often brings thoughts of sunshine and outdoor fun, it’s helpful to have a mix of summer activities ready — whether you’re looking to get outside or cool off indoors. Here are some family-friendly ideas:
- Visit a playground, splash pad, state or local park, or the beach. It’s a great way to enjoy fresh air, sunshine, and vitamin D — all on a budget.
- Pack a lunch and head out for a relaxing picnic.
- Sign up for the Department of Defense Morale, Welfare, and Recreation Summer Reading Series, which offers both local and virtual military youth programs.
- Check out your local library for free classes and activities that help families connect and engage with the community.
- Does your base have a theater? Many offer free or low-cost movie options.
- Attend a dive-in movie at the base pool or a free outdoor family movie night—perfect for winding down after a long day.
- Use video chats to stay connected with extended family and friends, helping to ease feelings of isolation.
- Explore our national parks! Admission is free for current military members, veterans, and Gold Star Families. Many families enjoy stopping at parks during cross-country PCS moves — creating lasting memories along the way.
ASYMCA Summer Programs & Events
Seventy percent of military parents report difficulty accessing quality, affordable childcare. The ASYMCA helps bridge that gap with military youth programs and family-focused summer support.
- Operation Camp offers a full-day camp experience for military children ages 5–12. Children enjoy a safe, educational environment that includes field trips, fitness activities, crafts, healthy snacks, and STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) programs.
- Operation Little Learners supports children aged 18 months to 5 years, promoting socioemotional, cognitive, and motor development while encouraging meaningful parent-child engagement. Virtual classes are also available at select locations.
ASYMCA also hosts exciting local events that vary by duty station. A few highlights include:
- Hampton Roads ASYMCA: Celebrate family with the annual Father-Daughter and Military Child Ball — an evening of fun, connection, and memories.
- San Diego ASYMCA: Enjoy summer with the Father-Daughter Ball, Big Bay Boom fireworks, and the Back 2 School Bash to gear up for fall.
- Alaska ASYMCA: The Mother-Son Adventure offers outdoor bonding and fun-filled activities in Alaska’s beautiful setting.
- Killeen ASYMCA: Build confidence and water safety skills with swim lessons and aquatic refinement camps for kids of all levels.
Across the country, ASYMCA offers engaging summer programs, playgroups, family events, and enrichment opportunities to help military families make the most of summer.
Parenting Tips for a Smooth Summer
- Head outside: Spend time at local beaches, playgrounds, and parks. Try outdoor STEM activities, container gardening, create sidewalk chalk art, or enjoy a sprinkler on hot days — classic summer activities that promote family fun and enjoyment.
- Get creative: Cook a new recipe with the kids, do summer-themed crafts, or make bird feeders and wind chimes from recycled materials. Many hardware stores also offer free monthly family craft events!
- Read together: Join local library summer reading programs, many of which offer prizes. Be sure to check the community board for free upcoming events.
- Explore for free: Visit a Blue Star Museum for free admission, a great opportunity for military support and cultural enrichment.
- Serve your community: Volunteer at your local ASYMCA branch, participate in a local clean-up, charity walk, or community garden project. Volunteering not only builds connections but also helps strengthen your resume.
Support is Available
While summer can be full of fun, it also brings challenges for military families. Building connections and leveraging local military support systems can ease the transition, especially when moving to a new duty station.
If you or someone you know is facing food insecurity, attend an ASYMCA food distribution event. You can also explore military youth programs and other summer programs through your local ASYMCA to stay connected, supported, and thriving all season long.
